BACKGROUND

The NCOI 2005: Corruption the Weakest Link conference was held on July 16, 2005, and its success was seen in the large number of Christians coming together and signing the Anti-Corruption Pledge which will be handed over to the Prime Minister of Malaysia as a sign of the Christian community’s commitment to promote Integrity and to fight against Corruption in Malaysia.  (You can continue to e-pledge online here)

Following upon this the organisers are holding a day-long conference on “Christian Citizenship and the Local Government”.

AIM

It is the desire of the organisers that Christians in Subang Jaya come together to participate in the formation of a culture of integrity at the grassroots level.

An outcome of this conference  is to help Subang Jaya residents begin to formulate an action agenda for the participation of Christians and churches in the municipality in mobilising a citizen-led action against corruption in local government. At the same time Christians who have not been able to sign the NCOI 2005 Anti-Corruption Pledge will have the opportunity to do so.

This conference represents the coming together of the Church of  Jesus Christ in Subang Jaya and fellow Christians to “speak the truth in love, full of  grace and hope” on the specific issue of corruption and the need to build structures of integrity to ensure good government at the level of community life in Subang Jaya.

Structure

Opening speech by Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.

Presentation of signature scroll to the Minister for onward forwarding to the Prime Minister.
Launch of the electronic pledge (e-pledge) campaign

The conference will be conducted in two sessions – morning and afternoon.

The morning session will focus at the head level. This session – Effective Christian Citizenship at the Local level – will educate us on the workings of local government and some issues arising.

This session will be moderated by Rev Wong Kim Kong, Secretary-General to the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship (NECF) Malaysia.

Our panel of speakers for the morning session are:

  • Dr Tan will speak to us from his experience as an MP and his relationship with the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL).
  • Mr M Selvendran, a retired senior civil servant and presently an Elder of TTDI Gospel Centre,   will highlight a biblical perspective on citizen participation in a local community.

The afternoon session addresses the heart or action level :  Positive engagement on the issues of corruption and the lack of good government at the local government level.

This session will be moderated by YB Dato’ Lee Hwa Beng, ADUN Subang Jaya.
